Heartless
A widowed accountant searches for her daughter’s killer in a city still recovering from eight years of war.
Less than a year after the Expanse War, Port Ashraven is still pulling its dead from the rubble, and what remains of its institutions is struggling to hold the city together.
Carice Frost carried her daughter through the war. Now widowed, she works as an accountant while the two of them learn to live in peacetime, though lately Iris has grown distant.
Then Iris is found dead, her body naked, and Carice’s life collapses. The case stalls for lack of leads, her employer wants her back at her desk, and the city has already moved on.
When there is nowhere left to turn, a stranger finds her. He promises revenge. In return, he wants her accounting skills. His timing is too perfect and his reach too deep, but Carice accepts.
Her search for Iris’ killer leads into the rot beneath Port Ashraven’s institutions, and toward people who know how to make grief useful. The only question left is what Carice is willing to become for Iris.
