Nearly one year after the Expanse War, Port Ashraven is still collapsing. Buildings fail, institutions fail with them, gangs fill the vacuum, and the police are too broken to chase most cases. Carice Frost is a widowed accountant whose thirteen-year-old daughter was murdered, her body found naked, then quietly filed under “no leads.” Her employer wants her back at her desk. The city moves on.

Carice reaches the point where nothing in her life feels survivable when a stranger offers what the state cannot: resources and a way to keep digging. The price is her competence, the quiet machinery of administration, front companies, signatures, transactions that must not exist. Carice must choose whether to let her daughter become another forgotten file, or take the only path still open, the one that could cost her what little remains.

Ravenu Ravlen is one of many agents the Pact has deployed to Port Ashraven. Under the name Celine Cassell, she works a cover job as a secretary, analyzing intercepted communications between the Republic’s corporations and the Directorate—the Pact’s oldest enemy.

But as pressure builds and manpower thins, Ravenu is pushed into fieldwork, assigned to a businessman the Pact wants watched. When progress stalls, her handlers make it clear: other methods are required. Desperate to leave the city and reunite with her fiancé, Ravenu must decide how far she’s willing to go. For the mission, for her oath to her king, and for the person she still hopes to be.

Legend

Fiach Threeborn is a young detective with a wife, a child on the way, and a reputation for doing everything by the book. But someone brings him proof the ambush was staged, along with a recruitment offer. Rick Lefer’s Unyielding unit, known for getting results and not waiting for warrants, wants Fiach to be part of their team. Furious they would use Hank’s death to pull him in, and convinced that men like Lefer are no different from the criminals they hunt, he agrees—only to expose them. But the deeper he goes, the harder it gets to find a way back out.
